Makes: 4 to 6 servings
Preparation time: 5 minutes
Cooking time: 10 minutes
Baking time: 25 minutes
Ingredients
1 pound Italian sausage
1 pound ball of prepared pizza dough
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 yellow onion, thinly sliced
4 to 5 dried Mission figs, sliced
4 ounces whole milk mozzarella, torn or sliced
Small fresh basil leaves for garnish
Preparation
Preheat a large, non-stick skillet over medium-high. Add the sausage. Stir to crumble the meat as it cooks. Cook until browned and no longer pink, 7 to 10 minutes. Set aside.
Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F.
Roll the dough to about a 12-by-9-inch oval. Place on a non-stick baking sheet or a pizza stone. Brush the dough with the olive oil.
Top the dough with the sausage and gently press down into the dough. Layer ½ of the onion slices and all of the figs over the sausage. Top with half of the cheese. Add the remaining onions and then the rest of the cheese.
Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, until the cheese is browned and the pizza dough is baked through. Garnish with basil leaves before serving.
